After a string of successful volunteering placements and after receiving the Investors in Volunteers Award Crest has now shared the recent experience of another volunteer, highlighting the powerful positive impact volunteering can have on the individual.
Lyn, a self-employed lady whose business had been going through a rough patch, ended up using Crest’s foodbank to help make ends meet.
After a short while Lyn decided that she wanted to help support the Foodbank that was supporting her. She came forward as a volunteer and worked with the Foodbank team to make sure that individuals just like her could keep getting the support which she had relied on.
Having opened up to Crest’s wellbeing team about her financial situation, she was referred to a local money saving support organization which provided training and support for Lyn. This coupled with the ongoing emotional support from Crest’s team throughout her time as a volunteer Lyn has supported her through this challenging period.
Having come through this difficult time and with the confidence gained from her time at Crest, and the up-to-date training given by the team, Lyn has gone on to gain paid employment.
Lyn shared:
“The support that I had from Crest was incredible. Everyone welcomed me with open arms and made me a part of the team.
“I knew first hand the impact of the work they were doing, particularly in the foodbank. That service is really a lifeline for some people in our community and I knew that I wanted to be a part of it and help people.
“However, I had no idea all the other ways that Crest would help me once I did come and volunteer. The support the team gave me was amazing and it really helped me get through what was a difficult time.”
Helen Roberts, Crest’s Social Inclusion Manager added:
“It has been a privilege to work with Lyn. She wanted to give back to the local community and I am so proud that we were able to help her achieve this.
“I am also impressed with how Lyn’s confidence has grown during her time with us. When Lyn came to us, she had been going through a hard time and had faced some issues with her business. With Crest’s support, she has a new job and is more confident than ever.
“We always want to make sure that people benefit from their volunteering with Crest, we want to understand how we can support and help volunteers achieve their goals, and at the same time volunteers can contribute to supporting Crest deliver our objectives. We believe volunteering has to work both ways, so the individual and the charity both benefit, which has proved successful for Crest and our dedicated team of volunteers.
“Thank you and well-done Lyn!”
Lyn still pops in to see the team and comes to volunteer in Crest’s foodbank whenever possible.
