SHOPPERS can turn their unwanted clothing into funding
for a primary school, thanks to a new recycling partnership.
Crest Co-operative has teamed up with Asda, Llandudno Junction. A bright purple clothing bank has been sited at the back of the supermarket car park. For every tonne of unwanted clothing recycled by the public, Crest Co-operative will pay £300 to Ysgol Maelgwn.
School pupils and staff from the Asda store joined Crest Co-operative’s mascot Tommy Textile this week, outside the new recycling bank. Unwanted clothing, shoes, handbags, sheets, blankets and curtains can be donated.
The clothing will be sold to the public at low prices at Crest Community Store in Colwyn Bay and Llandudno Junction. Crest Co-operative is a non-profit organisation. All funds generated from selling items will create jobs for local unemployed people and adults with learning disabilities.
Gisella Williams, headteacher at Ysgol Maelgwn, Llandudno Junction said: “We are really pleased that the funds will be donated to our school. We are an Eco school, so the money will contribute to our eco work. It is nice to be supported by the community.
Recycling is so important.”
Social enterprise Crest Co-operative has donated more than £2, 000 to local schools. Schools across the Conwy county currently take part in Crest’s Eco Schools education project.
