CREST Co-operative hopes to tackle rising bills by delivering free food to struggling community groups.
Earlier this year Crest Co-operative won the Social Enterprise of the Year 2012 award, in a Wales wide search. A cash prize of £1, 000 was awarded to the business, based in Llandudno Junction.
This week Crest Co-operative announced that the funds will be allocated to support four struggling Conwy and Denbighshire community groups in 2013. Staff and volunteers at Crest’s food re-distribution project FareShare North Wales, will deliver tinned, fresh and frozen food every week for one year to four good causes.
Crest Co-operative is inviting projects, which work to provide meals for homeless and vulnerable people, to register their interest if they would like to be considered. The aim of providing four free FareShare memberships is to help community groups, which have struggled to fund the cost of rising food bills.
Community groups must operate in the Conwy and Denbighshire counties and provide meals to homeless or vulnerable service users. A FareShare audit will be carried out on any projects, which are selected for membership.
Sharon Jones, Chief Executive of Crest Co-operative, said: “I am delighted to announce that we will be offering free food to four community groups in 2013. FareShare North Wales works with the food industry to re-distribute surplus, in-date food to Conwy and Denbighshire community groups.
“Service users pay a small fee. However we will be offering selected groups free food and delivery, every week for one year,” she added.
