Work Placements for Adults with Learning Disabilities
SUPPORTED WORK PLACEMENTS
Crest Co-operative provides a supported work opportunity service to individuals with learning and physical disabilities across Conwy and Denbighshire.
All individuals are supported by qualified support workers, to assist them in their work tasks and individual needs.
Work Opportunities Available
There are many different types of work that clients can choose from:
Clients are able to work in either of Crest Co-operative’s two shops, helping to prepare clothing ready for sale, as well as general housekeeping within the shop. This includes arranging displays and writing price tickets for items. They have the opportunity to learn life-skills such as ironing and arranging clothes within this role. Clients are also given assistance in serving customers and in using the tills.
There are opportunities available for clients to go out with the Crest Co-operative vans collecting furniture. Clients are encouraged to assess products to determine whether they are fit for resale. This helps to improve their decision making. Clients also have the opportunity to help with house clearances and removals.
In Crest Co-operative’s textile area, adults with learning and physical disabilities can iron clothes for the store and are shown how to sort clothes into different sizes. They are given guidance in how to sort the textiles by qualified support workers and are assisted when trying to decide whether clothes are fit for re-sale in Crest Co-operative’s shops. Clients can then help to prepare clothes for re-sale by washing, drying and ironing the clothes. Some clients are involved in weighing the textile bags and transferring weights to the calculator using numerical skills.
Some of our clients prepare textile and electrical collection bags ready for delivery to local houses. They are shown how to fold the bags, package them up ready for delivery and also to help deliver them to houses around the area.
Crest Co-operative also offer clients the chance to assist the kerbside textile collectors when delivering leaflets. Many individuals on Crest Co-operative’s work opportunities programme enjoy going out in the van for the day.
The team of qualified support workers will work with each individual to develop their skills. Skill development can include anything from numeracy skills to geography skills. Support workers will help the clients to make progress.
Each client will have a regular review with their support worker and all clients have an annual review. Presentation days are held to encourage development and certificates are presented. The clients also have the opportunity to vote for a day out.
Pick up and Drop off Service
Crest Co-operative offers a pick-up and drop off service for all work opportunity staff.
Pat Chapman, a support worker at Crest Co-operative said: “The placements are unique, they give each individual a choice. Some decide to work in the Community Store and others enjoy sorting the textiles.
“The clients we have at the moment have recently been on a sponsored walk, they have made some great friends and they all enjoy coming to work. They get paid for their work and at the end of the year they are given a certificate.”
Places are available each day of the week.
